giro d'italia 2012 cinque terre

Next Thursday, 17th May, the Giro d’Italia 2012 will touch on the villages hit by the flood. Two modifications has been made to the stage: after the city of La Spezia the race will go along the “Aurelia” road.

The Giro d’Italia comes back in Liguria: there are 2 stages in our region for the 2012 edition, the 12th Seravezza-Sestri Levante (May, 17th) and the 13th Savona-Cervere (May, 18th).

About the first one, also called the stage of the Cinque Terre, the route has been modified due to the flood occurred on October 2011. In two parts, the passage is still critical: the bridge over the Colombera in Ameglia, still out of service, and the road of the Cinque Terre interrupted from a landslide, where, already in 2009 edition, run a “chrono” stage.

The Giro d’Italia hardly wanted to transit just on that road, that is a symbol of the Cinque Terre in the world, also to give a message of solidarity to the local people.

The new route of the race touches the area hit by the flood, but only grazing the Cinque Terre.
Despite it, the organizing committee said “we could announce that the organization of the Giro d’Italia will make its best to give the best prominence and visibility to the flooded areas”.

So, in Sarzana the race will prosecute getting over the bridge on the Magra river and rejoining, from north, the original route in Romito Magra.

More substantial the change after La Spezia, where the race will go on along the “Aurelia” road (direction: Genoa) passing for the Grand Prix of the Foce Mt. that replaces the hard slopes of Biassa.

Then, the race will prosecute towards Riccò del Golfo and Pignone where starts the ascent to the Passo del Termine, where the race will re-enter in the original route.

From Passo del Termine (km 72.2) till the arrive in Sestri Levante (155 km) the race will follow the original route with the slope to the Valico Guaitarola and Valico la Mola running through the village of Carro.

Then, downhill road along the Petronio stream till Casarza Ligure where the race will face the last Mountain Grand Prix of this day in Villa Tassani (average gradient about 7%)

From this place miss only 11 km to the arrive. Still a technical descent and the crossing of Sestri Levante before the arrive line.

The day after the race will restart from Savona, always in Liguria.
